Welcome to Field Notes. This is my open journal for the UK Veterans Collective. It is a place to share what I am noticing, learning, questioning, and trying to make sense of in a noisy world. Some posts will be personal, some practical, and some simply honest reflections on life, service, purpose, and what it means to keep moving forward. If something here helps you think more clearly, feel less alone, or see things differently, then it has done its job.

Field Notes Journal Update 11 March 2026

There’s something reassuring about meeting up with former military colleagues. Yet, each time I have a beer or a brew with a veteran reminds me how quickly time moves on.

Remembrance Sunday in a prominent time in the military calendar, yet each year we see more grey hairs, more wisdom and drew pints going down the range. I love the banter, especially when attention turns to Kenny, who still thinks he can drink!

Yesterday I met up with Mal Biggs MBE for a spot of breakfast.  Mal and I worked together outside of the Army, and although we didn’t serve in the same units we share lots of good traits and memories.

I can’t put my finger on it, but there’s something reassuring about being in the company of military veterans. WhatsApp and FaceTime had made it easier to keep in touch but there’s nothing like being in the presence of old buddies.

As I write this I am listening to General Richard Shirreff giving his thoughts on the situation in the Middle East. I worked for Sir Richard in 1999-2000 and I tend to pay lots of attention to what he is saying.

The world seems noisy, and that's something I will talking to the UK Veterans Community about in the coming months.

I'm looking forward to catching up Keve later, he's a long time buddy. He and I had our fair share of mischief during our military apprentiship.

That's all for now.
